FUEL IS CLOSING TODAY - JUNE 14- THANK YOU KALAMAZOO FOR A WONDERFUL

WHERE WE'RE GOING: executive chef denise miller got offered a restaurant in CHICAGO!!!!

chef denise miller's sassafras soul cuisine (http://www.sassafrassoulcuisine.com/) meets brononzeville cookin' & urban juncture:

Urban Juncture, Inc. is creating a unique dining destination and culinary incubator celebrating the cuisines, cultures, and communities of peoples of African descent. Four distinctive, locally-owned and operated restaurants will share a turn-of-the century building in the heart of the historic Bronzeville community, with the first venues scheduled to open in 2011. Each of the venues will highlight a different aspect of black cuisine, one of the world’s richest. In addition, Bronzeville Cookin’ includes a fresh produce market designed to serve residents with delicious produce and improved health. Adjacent parking and multiple, nearby public transit options will provide easy access.

Bronzeville Cookin’ will serve the Bronzeville community and broader Chicagoland. It will expand greatly the supply of family-friendly dining options in Bronzeville, providing an important amenity as well as valuable opportunities for interaction. It will provide high-quality food and related programming, thereby helping to reduce diet-related illnesses in the community. It will create over 130 permanent jobs. It will draw Chicagoland foodies and culinary tourists to the community. It will introduce “green” technologies to the community and showcase local contractors and design professionals. And, it will provide key ownership opportunities to community members, keep money circulating within the community, and catalyze the creation of further culinary enterprises, thus providing important platforms for community development and wealth creation.

Look for our mobile initiative called fueling the fire - Fuel will pursue one of its original dreams of garnering a food truck that offers the opportunity for space that offers culinary arts classes and on the job training to traditionally marginalized young people. fueling the fire will to continue build on Fire Historical and Cultural Arts Collaborative’s (http://www.thisisfire.com/news.html) holistic workforce training and youth development programs which provide life skills, grant writing, arts training and work experience for youth from traditionally marginalized communities. With fuel's training and mobile kitchen space - Fire will be able to develop its culinary arts program - bites. fueling the Fire will continue to serve as a model for economic and youth development in the Kalamazoo community by providing a mobile and licensed kitchen home for fire catering & fuel food & access to that food throughout Kalamazoo by bringing the food to all Kalamazoo neighborhoods &
employing individuals in those neighborhoods to be a part of the fueling the fire team. Look for that initiative to be building momentum this summer.

Fuel is an outpost hot spot, chill spot, and a home to healthy living.   Fuel has been described as as a combination platter of Chicago's Wishbone meeting Karen's Raw.  It is a home of culinary wellness and creatively hatched by Executive Chef Denise Miller.  Head-bobbing hip with honest food, local food and comfort food. Foods of the world, robust and imaginative, deeply flavorful with textures and colors that go pop to the eye and tantalize the tastebuds. Beautiful plates but more - Plant-based, grain-based, eco-responsible and nutritious all wrapped up in a socially-conscious and aesthetically inspiring environment sprinkled with a dash of local art, artists, poets and musicians, guest chefs and djs. Fuel has a hand made table wating for you.

Fuel is a funky 23-seat completely vegetarian and mostly vegan (with a small but expanding raw men) eatery set inside a vintage filling station at the busy corner of South Burdick and East Alcott Streets in the southside neighborhood of Kalamazoo, Michigan and is open Thursday - Saturday, 5pm - 9pm and Sunday, 10am - 2pm. Reservations are accepted and highly recommended.eat@fuelvegetarian.com.

Our philosophy: Unequivocally Community Driven
With each bite of fuel's food, you are supporting space that offers culinary arts classes and on the job training to traditionally marginalized young people. fuel will build on Fire Historical and Cultural Arts Collaborative’s holistic workforce training and youth development programs which provide life skills, grant writing, arts training and work experience for youth from traditionally marginalized communities. With fuel's training and kitchen space - Fire will be able to develop its culinary arts program - bites. fuel will help Fire continue to serve as a model for economic and youth development in the Edison neighborhood and the Kalamazoo community by providing a permanent and licensed kitchen home for bites. As a result,  fuel will help Fire address the deeply ingrained social cycle of poverty, violence, and neglect that effects people ages 16 to 24. fuel staff understands that restaurant training and mentoring provides experience in a thriving hospitality sector and allows young people to identify their passion while supporting themselves and their families. At fuel, our attempt is to take it a few steps further.   After young adults are trained through and cater for Bites for a minimum of six months, fuel intends to provide at least one youth with a job in the restaurant. As the business grows, fuel will continue to hire more Bite's trained staff.

Open Tuesday - Saturday - 5 pm - 9 pm AND
Sunday brunch 10 am - 2 pm
